Here in the CADS3D studio, the team are currently extending the scope of an animated fly-through that was produced at the end of 2011 for an independent trust hospital in the South East of England. The original project brief was to provide a range of cost-effective 3D animations to assist the project stakeholders with the sign-off of the overall spatial layout. To achieve this goal, it was decided that the first edit should follow the visitor journey from the outside, through the main doors,...

Most cameras within the 3D world now mirror a lot of the capabilities found in modern DSLR’s, and we should use this to our advantage. Let’s look at some theory before diving into the practical: THEORY White balance (WB) is the process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in reality are rendered white in your photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the “color temperature” of a light source. This refers to the relative warmth...

Oxford Plastics Ltd. approached us with quite a unique request! They had an upcoming exhibition and wanted a 2m square large format print showing their road barriers in context. But not only did they want that, they also wanted the barriers to look like they were coming out of the stand, by placing real life barriers in front! It’s probably easier to explain if you look at the finished result! The photo won’t win any competitions but it does illustrate my point. The large format...

Camera shake or camera wiggle is an ever increasing technique used in TV and film. There are a wide range of pieces of equipment that enable you to do this with a real physical camera but fortunately we need none of that to do it on the computer! We’re going to use 3ds Max for this. Your first thought might be “Why don’t you just do the camera shake in After Effects using the wiggle expression?” My answer would be that if you have no time left to do it in 3ds Max, then sure, do it in...

The F-number on a camera lens relates to the aperture size. The larger the F-number the smaller the aperture is, this means less light is taken in to the camera. See the two images below, both have the same settings for Shutter speed, ISO and White balance, but very different F-numbers. F-number 4.0 F-number 16 The F– number 16 photograph is underexposed as the smaller aperture did not let in enough light. If we wanted to keep the aperture size at 16, but have the photo...
